其政闷闷,
其民淳淳。
其政察察,
其民缺缺。
祸尚福之所倚。
福尚祸之所伏。
孰知其极,
其无正。
正复为奇,
善复为妖。
人之迷其日固久。
是以圣人
方而不割。
廉而不刿。
直而不肆。
光而不耀。
Gentle Leadership
If you reign silently and unobtrusively, your people will remain simple and sincere. If you want to check and determine everything in an authoritarian way, your people will be devious and deceitful.
Happiness rests on grief, grief lurks in happiness.
Who can know his limits if the guiding principle is missing? If norms are perverted, they cause chaos; if goodness is perverted, it causes disastrous things; day by day, the human quandary is getting more obstinate and persistent!
Therefore, wise men are outspoken, yet not offending, subtle, yet not piercing, direct, yet not dissolute, brilliant, yet not blinding.
